According to the British government, since half of the ships against which sanctions were introduced today transported oil and oil products (especially gasoline) worth more than $4.3 billion in the last year alone, this is the largest package of sanctions against Great Britain.
“This move will further limit the Kremlin’s ability to finance its illegal war in Ukraine and its malicious activities around the world, and will bring the total number of oil tankers under UK sanctions to 73 – more than any other country, which demonstrates Great Britain’s leadership in the fight against the shadow fleet,” the message reads.
Revenues from oil sales are a key source of funding for the Kremlin’s illegal war in Ukraine. London stresses that curbing these revenues, including by cracking down on the companies that insure these vessels, is vital to maintaining shared security – weakening the Kremlin’s war machine, keeping shipping lanes safe and protecting international trade.
The assets of companies in the UK are to be frozen and deals with them prohibited.
