This was reported by officials for The Washington Post.

WP notes that such an initiative was proposed due to the fears of Ukraine’s allies that after the inauguration of the new president Donald Trump, there will be drastic changes in the policy regarding the war in Ukraine.

According to some officials, the Biden administration is also disappointed that Ukrainian leaders do not want to lower the age of mobilization from 25 to 18, as called for in the United States.

Administration representatives emphasize that President Joe Biden’s decision at the end of his presidential term to authorize missile strikes deep into the territory of the Russian Federation may give Ukraine some time to control the situation. However, officials still call on the Ukrainian authorities to expand their army by more than 160,000 soldiers, which, as noted in Kyiv, the Armed Forces of Ukraine need.

“Perhaps, the arms gap between Ukraine and Russia is not completely closed, but it has improved significantly. As for manpower, it is simply a matter of mathematics and physics. I am not trying to blame Ukraine for anything. It is a very difficult issue for them. But during especially in the last year, they are simply not mobilizing and training enough soldiers to replace losses on the battlefield,” one of the officials said on condition of anonymity.

Also, one of the high-ranking representatives of the US Department of Defense emphasized that the main risk of such short-term aid to Ukraine would be a threat to other missions, because the military allocates more resources and personnel to the location of a large amount of military equipment in European countries. He noted:

“We were looking at what the options would be … if we were to be tasked with this acceleration and what the cost would be to other missions around the world.”

According to a representative of the administration, the White House decided to provide such assistance, despite the problem with American stockpiles, taking into account “all the consequences that the war in Ukraine has for the international order based on rules and for other theaters of war around the world, as well as the fact that , what lessons will authoritarian states learn from this.”

“The most decisive factor on the battlefield today is Ukrainian soldiers who are ready to fight for the stabilization of the front line,” he added.

In their turn, military analysts emphasize the sharp increase of Russian troops in the west of Donetsk region, which threatens Pokrovsk and Velika Novosilka, as well as Ukrainian supply lines.

However, a representative of the US Department of Defense believes that the threat is not so strong, because the area south of Pokrovsk is not very well protected, and the Ukrainian military is also withdrawing to safer positions.

“I expect that once they (the Russians – UNIAN) get through this open terrain and face the more fortified defenses of the Ukrainians, it will become more typical for them and you will go back to a much slower pace of advance, to the grueling fighting that we saw in other times,” the official explained.

USA and Ukraine – latest newsEarlier, Reuters journalists reported that the United States is preparing an arms package for Ukraine worth $725 million. In particular, the Biden administration plans to provide a variety of weapons from American stockpiles, including anti-personnel mines, drones, Stinger missiles and ammunition for highly mobile HIMARS artillery missile systems.

At the same time, the Newsweek publication, referring to the statements of White House representatives, reported that the USA will not transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine. It is noted that such rumors began to spread due to the new threats of the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to the West.
