Students will undergo military training / UNIAN photoIn Ukraine, up to 80 thousand students of the second year of study will undergo basic general military training in higher education institutions.
The Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovy said this during an hour of questions to the government in the Verkhovna Rada. He recalled the launch from September 1 this year of basic general military training in higher education institutions.
The Minister noted that 170 educational programs have already been developed and submitted for approval of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces.
“We now predict 75-80 thousand students. These are all male students of the second year of study. Girls, according to the legislation, can be joined at will. Consultation with the Ministry of Defense on the content and format of the practical part, which should begin in May 2026, continue.”
The Minister of Education and Science noted that no additional funding has been allocated for this purpose. “Today we finance this from the Ministry of Education. The need for implementation of this program is only in 2025 – it is UAH 130 million,” – said Lisovy.

Basic military training in universitiesIn the universities of Ukraine, on September 1, 2025, basic military training will begin. The program will consist of theoretical and practical parts.
Deputy Minister of Defense Serhiy Melnyk stated that basic military training is compulsory for everyone. And if students from some principles cannot pass the exam or pass it on “unsatisfactory”, if they refuse to take a military oath, then they will not be able to continue their studies in higher education in the future.
