Celin Georgescu won almost 23 percent of the vote.
According to the publication, Georgescu, who supports the regime of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and claims that the “imperialist” military-industrial complex is behind the war in Ukraine, won about 22.9 percent of the vote.
In turn, the pro-Western candidates, Jelena Lasconi and Marcel Čolaku, won approximately 19 percent of the vote.
“If the result is confirmed, it will be a significant departure after exit polls showed that Cholaku … is on the way to a relatively easy victory,” the newspaper writes.
The mass media reminds that Romania has been a loyal NATO ally in recent years, increasing its defense budget to almost 2.5 percent of GDP:
“If Georgescu wins the second round of elections on December 8, it will cause considerable concern among Romania’s Western partners. The president has significant powers over foreign and security policy and the appointment of judges.”
