The specific details of this agreement are still unknown.

Ukraine and Sweden intend to start close cooperation and initiate a major export agreement on the supply of Gripen fighters to our country. This cooperation will be long-term, the UNIAN correspondent reports from the words of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
First, the leaders of the states signed a corresponding letter of intent.
“This is the beginning of a long journey. This will bring us one step closer to a major export agreement for Saab, for Sweden together with Ukraine. This means great opportunities for the Air Force of Ukraine and also for Sweden and our defense industry, and long-term industrial cooperation between Sweden and Ukraine,” Kristersson noted.
As the Prime Minister of Sweden specified, the signed letter of intent is not aimed at any specific new deliveries right now at this moment.
“This is about long-term cooperation. Because it is about cooperation and the possibility of starting a big agreement between our countries for about 100-150 Gripen E-series fighters, which is now starting to be produced. And this will allow us to build a very serious Air Force in Ukraine, which will become part of a large family of fighter systems. This agreement is a clear mutual statement of intentions and it is the beginning of a long journey for the next 10–15 years,” Kristersson stressed.
What else is known about this deal?As the Prime Minister of Sweden added, the letter of intent creates the necessary prerequisites for a major export agreement regarding Gripen fighters between Sweden and Ukraine.
“If we succeed, it will help increase security in our part of the world, and strengthen Ukraine and Sweden. We fully understand that there is a long way ahead. From today, we are committed to considering all options to provide Ukraine with a large number of Gripen fighters in the future,” Kristersson emphasized.
In his turn, Zelensky noted that today a new and meaningful page is opening in bilateral relations between the countries, and moreover, in security relations in Europe.
“Today there is such a first document between our countries, which paves the way for Ukraine to receive a very serious fleet of Swedish-made Gripen combat aircraft,” Zelensky emphasized.
The president noted that “these are very cool planes, strong aviation platforms that allow you to perform a wide range of tasks.”
As UNIAN reported, Gripen fighters are produced by the defense company Saab. Zelensky arrived at the factory of the defense company Saab, the manufacturer’s key hub in Linkoping, to discuss a major defense export deal.
Ukraine has been interested in Swedish combat aircraft for a long time, but so far they have not been used to strengthen the Air Force of Ukraine.
