Today is a good day.
We brought home another 189 of our boys from Russian captivity. These are the soldiers of the Armed Forces, the National Guard – the defenders of Mariupol and “Azovstal”, our border guards. Two civilians. I thank the entire exchange team. Thanks to the United Arab Emirates for the mediation. And, of course, I am grateful to all our soldiers who replenish the exchange fund for Ukraine. This is the most important thing – we have to return all our people from captivity, all soldiers and civilians, each and every one who is waiting to be returned. We will continue to do so.
Signed the decree on the appointment of the commissioner for the protection of the rights of our soldiers and military family members. Olga Reshetylova, a well-known Ukrainian human rights defender, will now be engaged in the preparation of the draft law on the military ombudsman – we must create such an institution. And it’s not just that there should be one person – systematic work is needed so that the ombudsman has an apparatus, all real opportunities to influence the situation and help. And it is very important that each of our military personnel feels that it is really real to apply for support and receive it. What exactly and how exactly should the military ombudsman do, build correctly with the participation of our soldiers and ask them directly about it. And we do it on the “Army+” platform. We’re launching a survey about the military ombudsman, and I’m asking each of our soldiers, each officer, to say what the priorities should be.
Today, there is a solution that helps our army become more modern and implement the experience of defense now – the experience of this war. We’ve made it easier for soldiers and NCOs with combat experience to earn officer ranks, and these are the right social elevators for the Army.
Today, I want to thank the team of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy for the visit of our delegation to Damascus – to the new Syria. I am waiting for the ministers’ report on the negotiations, on the first results. And this leadership of Ukraine, this speed of Ukraine in foreign policy is exactly what can give the necessary plus. We can help restore stability in Syria after years of Russian intervention, and this will certainly help us restore peace for ourselves. It will be right to restore our diplomatic relations with Syria, our economic cooperation. And I really hope that post-Assad Syria will respect international law in a way that Assad could not and would not. He was not independent, dependent and simply did not understand what it means to respect his people and the international community.
