The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak took part online in the event dedicated to the point of the Peace Formula regarding environmental security. The event took place in the Ukrainian pavilion within the framework of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku. It was moderated by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Svitlana Grynchuk.

According to Andrii Yermak, the number of documented cases of environmental damage is 2.5 thousand, 200 environmental war crimes are under investigation. Separately, he emphasized that Russian aggression also harms food security.

“In order to build resilience to climate change, it is necessary to defend against the barbarism of the Putin regime. Ukraine is at the forefront of this struggle. President Zelenskyi’s peace formula contains a plan to restore stability in the world, and point eight is particularly important regarding environmental security,” he said.

Svitlana Grynchuk emphasized that as a result of Russian aggression, rivers are polluted, energy and transport infrastructure is destroyed, and this affects not only Ukraine.

“The situation changes every day, new challenges appear. We met in Helsinki and discussed the issue of environmental crimes – how we can counter it and jointly develop principles for the restoration of Ukraine,” she said.

Oleksandr Bevz, adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, who also spoke at the online event, noted that the Peace Formula of the President of Ukraine paid special attention to the environmental consequences of war. He specified that within the framework of the thematic conference on environmental security, which took place in Finland, more than 60 countries and international organizations confirmed their support for the proper assessment of environmental damage from Russian aggression, the prosecution of those responsible for environmental crimes, and the “green” restoration of Ukraine.

“It is important for Ukraine and the world not to allow the environment to become a silent victim of this war. It is especially important to remember this in the context of the intensification of Russian shelling of Ukrainian cities and the escalation of hostilities,” summed up Oleksandr Bevz.

In total, representatives of more than a hundred countries and international organizations took part in the event in Baku.
