The Elena Zelenska Foundation signed a memorandum of cooperation with the government of the Åland Islands. It allocates 3 million euros for the restoration and arrangement of shelters in schools and kindergartens in Ukraine.
“We are very grateful to the Åland Islands for their support, in particular in restoring protective shelters for children in schools and kindergartens. With joint efforts, we will be able to return even more children to full-time education,” the first lady said.
Thanks to these funds, it will be possible to equip shelters, in particular, in Dnipro Oblast, Mykolaiv Oblast, and Odesa Oblast.
“Today, Europe must demonstrate strength and unity. The Åland Islands are firmly on the side of Ukraine. By supporting education and security, we help Ukrainian children build their future. This is a vivid example of the Åland Islands’ contribution to the strengthening and unification of Europe,” said the head of the government of the Åland Islands, Katrin Sjögren.
The shelters, which the Elena Zelenska Foundation will comprehensively restore and equip with these funds, will be barrier-free and maximally adapted for children’s comfortable stay and education.
“The common future of the world depends on our children. We hope that our contribution will help Ukraine to restore hope and build a peaceful and sustainable future,” said the Speaker of the Åland Islands Parliament, Jørgen Pettersson.
The Foundation’s team not only carries out capital repairs, but also implements an individual zoning and arrangement project for each of the objects – with spaces for learning, communication, rest and leisure.
“We restore shelter only where the security situation makes it possible to return to face-to-face education. Today, we have 12 shelters in operation in various regions, three of them are already fully functioning,” stated the director of the Elena Zelenska Foundation, Nina Gorbachova.
In total, this school year more than 3 thousand children in Poltava region and Chernihiv region were able to return to offline education thanks to shelters arranged by the Foundation.
The restoration of the shelters, which will be funded by the government of the Åland Islands, will start at the beginning of next year.
