This year, the Elena Zelenska Foundation financed the creation of six Superhero Schools – in hospitals in Lviv, Vinnytsia, Poltava, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa and Rivne. This was announced by the First Lady of Ukraine during an address to the participants of the Conference of Hospital Teachers of Superhero Schools.
More than 150 teachers who teach children in hospitals took part in the event. The purpose of the conference is to share experiences, discuss strategic planning, develop and scale up the network of schools.
“Superhero Schools are home to superhero students who combine education and treatment. But you, their teachers, are also superheroes for your wards. When a teacher enters a hospital classroom or a ward, approaches a desk or a bed and the child feels that now will be interesting, feels interest and desire for life, already at that moment your mission is accomplished,” said Olena Zelenska.
The first lady also thanked the international partners of the Foundation for their help and assured that this project will be scaled up.
In addition, the Foundation has committed to rebuilding the School of Superheroes at the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, which was destroyed by a Russian missile attack in July. The plans for next year include the creation of six new educational centers in medical institutions.
“We all lack ordinary, everyday things. A sense of the normality of our existence. And it is returned, in particular, by teachers of hospital schools. Thank you! I and the Foundation will do everything in our power to create conditions worthy of superheroes,” concluded Olena Zelenska.
The School of Superheroes appeared as a public initiative in 2016. It acquired state status five years later, and at the same time, the First Lady of Ukraine took patronage over this project. Currently, 17 schools are working at hospitals in 13 cities.
