The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, visited the advanced command post of the 65th Separate Mechanized Brigade, which defends Zaporizhzhia.
The head of state listened to the report of brigade commander Volodymyr Izbash about the situation in his unit’s area of responsibility, the organization of defense in the direction and interaction with other brigades.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated the soldiers of the 65th Separate Mechanized Brigade on Ground Forces Day.
“I want to thank you on behalf of all of us for protecting our state. I can only wish for health and patience. Thank you for holding back the enemy. Thank you to your family and friends for supporting you,” he said.
The president honored the soldiers with state awards. Four defenders were awarded the “Cross of Combat Merit”:
Lieutenant Nazar Grek. This year, in February, he found 11 wounded soldiers on the road at a position near Robotyny, provided them with help, took them to a safe place despite enemy fire, and then returned to perform a combat mission. In May, he saved the life of a wounded soldier who could not move on his own. Nazar Grek carried the soldier almost 4 km under mortar fire and FPV drones to the evacuation point.
Senior Sergeant Anatoly Demchuk. The head of the reconnaissance group that carried out tasks in the Kharkiv region, and then in Zaporizhzhia. The unit under his leadership gathered information about the movements of the occupiers, repelled enemy assaults and adjusted Ukrainian artillery fire. During one of the shooting battles, Anatoly Demchuk personally defeated the assault group. He also helped civilians: he organized their evacuation, took them out from under the rubble after shelling and provided assistance.
Captain Denys Nezhivy. In February of this year, as a deputy battalion commander, he organized the defense of advanced positions near Staromayorsky in Donetsk region, personally participated in a counterattack and brought out 12 wounded subordinates under heavy fire. In April, he thwarted the occupiers’ intention to surround the battalion’s positions, and in August he conducted an operation to destroy a concentration point of the Russian invaders.
Chief Sergeant Andrii Mereshko. This year, in October, a group under his command repelled an enemy assault near the village of Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia, destroyed 13 invaders and continued to carry out the mission under heavy fire. During the battle, Andrii Mereshko made a decision to evacuate the wounded, and he remained to hold his position for almost 4 hours until reinforcements arrived.
The President also honored the defenders with Bohdan Khmelnytskyi orders of the first and third degrees and the medal “For a Saved Life”.
