Legendary Ukrainian football player Ihor Belanov told how he was accused of theft in 1986 in Germany.
“It was all invented, fabricated. Actually, the problem was not with me, but with my friends. Local media simply needed Belanov. I scored a very good goal that day and they paid me a bonus of 5,000 marks. I immediately donated this money to sick children in Germany. After that, the press wrote: “Stole 2,000 marks worth of goods from the store.”
So how could I steal two thousand if I donated five? My friends left the shop early and I was left there alone. Then the lawyer told me, “The magazine and the reporters need the story. You were close – and they took advantage of it.” Unfortunately, that’s exactly how it happened,” Belanov said.
