The allocation of quotas for the 2028 Olympics football tournament has been approved

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved FIFA’s proposal for the composition of football tournaments on Olympic Games 2028 in Los Angeles.

16 teams in the women’s tournament and 12 teams in the men’s tournament will take part in the football tournament of the OI-2028. The FIFA Council then confirmed the allocation of quotas for each confederation.

The expansion of the women’s tournament from 12 to 16 teams reflects the joint commitment of FIFA, the IOC and LA28 organizers to raise the profile of women’s sport, celebrate the strength of women’s soccer in the United States and open up new opportunities for more players and nations on the world stage.

FIFA has consistently advocated for the expansion of the women’s football tournament at the Olympics, including a formal request to increase the number of teams from 12 to 16 ahead of Paris 2024. This decision is in line with FIFA’s 2023-2027 Strategic Objectives for Global Football to create more opportunities for women and girls in football at all levels of the game.
