“I didn’t stand, I played.” Artem Kusly – about the crushing victory over Hamburg

Ex-goalkeeper of “Dnipro” Artem Kusly in an exclusive interview for Sport.ua, he recalled how “Dnipro” defeated “Hamburg” in the UEFA Cup of the 2002/03 season.

– It was you who stood in the same match with Hamburg. A crushing victory, they also left the gate “dry”. What are your memories of this match?

– First I want to correct you. I did not “stand”, but “played”, because the elephants are standing in the zoo, and the goalkeepers are playing (laughs, I.L. note).

I was nervous before the match, Mefodievich said long before the match that I would play. We lost the first game minimally, the Germans have a very strong team. There was excitement in the return match at “Meteor”. How nice it was to win and go further after such a strong excitement. “Hamburg” was one of the best teams in Germany, and we beat them 3:0, a very nice moment.

– How did you overcome the excitement?

– It was not easy, but with the starting whistle and the first touch of the ball, everything passes. You concentrate on the game and think how to help the guys and defeat the opponent. It was a very big desire, because the responsibility is insane. For the first time in a long time, it was possible to go this far in the European Cups. After the game, there were extremely positive emotions, the stadium exploded, there were wild ovations.

– Mefodievich’s phrase about “Brandenburg Gate” is well known, but what did he say after the match in the locker room?

– He congratulated. As you can see, if they won 3:0, it means that the coach did everything right.
