Ryan Flamingo, PSV defender: “Napoli is a strong team with many big boys. But we showed that we can match them and that we can play good football. The second half was simply fantastic. I think we played very well. At half-time we felt we could score a few more goals and we did. It’s a pity that they missed another one, but then they scored even more.”
Scott McTominaythe author of two Napoli goals: “This is football, you have to take it as it is. We have to defend better when we know we have ten left to show a little bit more than what we showed in the last 10-15 minutes of the game. In football, the next match always comes quickly. Two quick PSV goals in the first half? Yeah, they were pretty weird. Simply – bang, bang – and we were already 1:2 behind. We played pretty well. But this is football. It happens.” The season is long. We need to stay calm. We can’t go crazy and think about too many things. One match at a time. I’ve always said that throughout my career. Tonight didn’t go the way we wanted it to. So the next match will be already, and we have to play better.”
Dennis MannPSV striker, author of two goals: “Unbelievable, I think this is the best night of my life. We deserved to win and we are happy. Napoli – I know them, they are a very good team. I told the boys before the game that it would be difficult, but we scored two quick goals. And then we played better and better. When we play against big teams, it’s easier for us. We have more space for our game. We have some players of very high quality. And I know that I can help this team a lot. I’m getting better and better.”
It was truly a top night for PSV – their Champions League campaign is gaining momentum. But this is a bitter evening for Napoli. The defeat leaves them with three points from their opening three Champions League matches.
PSV’s Dennis Man was named man of the match by UEFA’s technical panel of observers. They stated: “Mann put an incredible amount of energy into the game, both in defense and attack. He also scored two goals.”
