The Toffees opened the scoring through Kiernan Dewsbury Hall in the first half after Idrissa Gueye’s surprise dismissal, before holding on to their lead thanks in large part to a superb performance from England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who made several outstanding saves.
The Man United team is very far from its best form from the opening minutes. The Red Devils squandered a chance to move up in the Premier League standings.
Ruben Amorim: “Forget about the result. The result is very bad, but I was more concerned about the feeling I had while playing. Everyone should have played better today.
The understanding of every game situation was lacking and so was the quality around the penalty area. But the most important thing is the intensity. It is felt immediately as soon as we start the match. We can sense when we are at the top level of intensity and when we are not, and in that state it is impossible to win the match.
I have said many times that I understand: we still have a lot to do. I have that feeling, but of course I’m very disappointed with the way we played, especially at home, and especially given what’s happened this week with other clubs and looking at the table. The way we performed, especially from the first minute of the game, is really, really disappointing.
We have to play differently. Sometimes we succeed. Sometimes we can have a good run of results and a good game, but then we drop, and we need to win every time. We didn’t play well as a team. We didn’t understand the game and just went with the flow. And this is my biggest anxiety.
If we’re not in the right condition, we won’t win matches – and that’s what happened today. The opponents were better than us when they played in equal formations. They defended well in ten. I congratulate them.
We cannot change the past. We cannot now cry and think about what happened. We need to prepare by improving many aspects. The most important thing is to finally understand that you have to play every match with high intensity to win.”
