The independent panel found the club exceeded the allowable loss threshold by £20.8m between 2022 and 2024. With Leicester currently playing in the Championship, the EFL board ratified the decision to impose the sanctions immediately.
Before the penalty, the “foxes” had 38 points and were in 17th place, but after the withdrawal of 6 points, they dropped to 20th place. They remain above the relegation zone only on goal difference, ahead of West Brom, who have the same 32 points.
Earlier, Leicester sacked head coach Marty Cifuentes. The team have lost 11 of their 29 games under his leadership and are currently looking for a new manager as the next match against Birmingham City (February 7) could be critical in the fight for survival.
The EFL said the club could appeal the sanction, but the commission confirmed breaches of financial stability rules during Leicester’s time in the Premier League. Over a three-year period, the club suffered losses of more than £200 million against the maximum allowed of £81 million.
