The head coach of Girona, Michel, commented on the minimal defeat of his team in the match of the 22nd round of La Liga against Real Oviedo (0:1), which became the first for the Catalans in 2026.

According to the mentor, his team controlled the course of the match, but failed to turn possession of the ball into real threats to the opponent’s goal:

“We controlled the game, but we need to create more chances, be more decisive and act more vertically in the final phase of the attacks. We had about 60% of the possession, but that’s not enough if you don’t hurt the opponent. We lacked the last step in the final third of the pitch, which is the most important thing in football,” Marca quoted Michela as saying.

The expert also emphasized that the problem lies not in the team or transfers, but in the mentality and approach to the game in front of someone else’s goal:

“There comes a moment when you don’t need to give another pass. You need to hit, serve, go aggressively into the penalty area. You can train for this. You can’t score if you don’t hit the goal,” the coach said.

Separately, Michel mentioned the episode involving the Ukrainian attacker Vladyslav Vanat, who, in his opinion, should have acted more decisively:

“The first half was almost perfect, but Vanat had a moment that could have been finished immediately. Instead of a shot, he started to control the ball and lost it. Sometimes you have to act more simply and aggressively,” said the coach.

After 22 rounds, Girona is 11th in the La Liga table with 25 points. Vladyslav Vanat scored seven goals in 19 league games in his debut season for the club, while Viktor Tsygankov has four goals and two assists in 16 matches.
