After the final whistle, the stands at Anfield erupted with disgruntled boos and whistles, but head coach Arne Slot did not criticize the fans, but fully supported their emotions. Commenting on the reaction of the stadium, the Dutch specialist emphasized that the result of the match is unacceptable for the club’s ambitions.
“It didn’t sound like a whistle to me, it was a sound of frustration. And I understand that completely. I have the same frustration and the players feel the same. If you, being Liverpool, are not disappointed with the home draw with Burnley, then something has gone very wrong,” said Slot.
The coach admitted that the team lost points in a situation where the victory should have been undisputed: “We lost too many points when we didn’t deserve it. It’s only ourselves to blame,” Arne emphasized.
The statistics of the match make the result even more painful for the hosts. Liverpool had 32 shots on goal (11 on target) and had an Expected Goals (xG) of 2.95, but managed just one goal through Florian Wirz. Burnley, on the other hand, had its only shot on goal.
“I agree that we should have won this game. I couldn’t have asked for more in terms of creating chances, but I would have liked us to have executed them better. That sums up a big part of our season,” added the coach.
A penalty in the first half could have changed the situation, but Dominik Soboslai could not beat the goalkeeper. The draw continued a disappointing run, with Liverpool failing to beat any of the three teams promoted from the lower division at home for the first time since the 1980/81 season (previously draws with Sunderland and Leeds). The loss of points pushed the Merseysiders away from the championship leaders.
However, there is good news for the fans of the Reds: Mohamed Salah will return to the team in the coming days. The Egyptian, who finished fourth at the Africa Cup of Nations, is set to bolster the team’s attack ahead of crucial trips to Marseille and Bournemouth.
