Espanyol have taken unprecedented security measures ahead of the Catalan derby against Barcelona on January 3. The main reason for the tension was the return of the “Parrots” pet Joan Garcia, who joined the “blue garnets” in the summer for 25 million euros.

As reported Marcaat the Cornelia-El Prat stadium, protective nets will be installed behind both gates. The club’s management is keen to prevent possible throwing of objects at the goalkeeper by fans who consider his transfer a betrayal. In addition, a strict admission regime will apply to the match:

  • Prohibition of symbols: fans with any Barcelona paraphernalia (T-shirts, caps, flags) will not be allowed to enter the stands.
  • Careful care: laptops, helmets, suitcases and large bags will be prohibited at the entrance – everything that could theoretically be used to throw onto the field.

For Joan Garcia, this will be the first game against his former team. Meanwhile, Espanyol are having one of their best seasons in recent years, sitting fifth in La Liga, while Barcelona top the table.
