A historic fiasco at Anfield.
The match at Anfield went according to the expected scenario. Liverpool dominated from the first minutes: first, Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring, and under the curtain of the first half, the Reds’ star newcomer Florian Wirtz scored his debut goal in the Premier League. Despite the fact that Santiago Bueno played one goal in the second half, Wolverhampton could not even pull out a draw.
The final whistle recorded not just another defeat, but a fall of historical proportions. This game turned Wolverhampton into the main anti-hero of English football statistics: No club in the top division in the history of the English Football League (which has been played since 1888) has had such a meager record at this stage of the season.
Wolves became the first elite team since the 1902/03 season (then a similar “achievement” was achieved by Bolton) who could not win at least one victory in the opening 18 matches of the championship. The previous Premier League record for longest winless streak from the start of the season was held by Sheffield United (17 matches in the 2020/21 season).
Wolverhampton have now officially surpassed that mark. The situation in the club looks critical. With two points to their credit, the Wolves are already two points behind the rescue zone. 11 points in a season (against Derby County’s record in 2007/08) now seems almost unattainable for the current Wolverhampton side unless they change course urgently.
We will remind, last week, after ten years at the head of the club, the executive chairman of Wolverhampton Jeff Shea resigned
