The Spaniard said that before moving to the London club, he dreamed of a transfer to Manchester City and was ready to literally beg for this transfer. When Cucurella learned of the interest from the townspeople, he was excited at the prospect of playing under Pep Guardiola.
“Man City wanted me before I joined Chelsea. They were on fire, one of the best teams in the world. I wanted to leave. When such an offer comes, when Guardiola calls, you kneel down if necessary. But the clubs could not agree,” Cucurella told Informe.
Manchester City refused to pay the amount demanded by Brighton of about 50 million pounds. Their bids of £30m and £40m were rejected by the Seagulls.
Chelsea intervened in the situation and agreed to pay 55 million pounds plus 7 million in bonuses, which decided the fate of the transfer.
Despite the difficult start of his career in London, Cukurella now feels happy in Chelsea. He recently confirmed that he has extended his contract with the club and also played a key role in the 3-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League, successfully neutralizing Lamin Yamal.
