The head coach of the Scottish national team, Steve Clark, commented on the victory over the national team of Denmark (4:2) in the qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup:

“It’s very simple – what a fantastic group of players. Unbelievable. I’ve been talking about it since the beginning of my career. It took me a year, maybe 18 months, to work out the best way forward. If I can give myself a bit of credit, I’ve chosen the right way,” Clarke said.

The coach admitted that before the game he felt great confidence in the team:

“I woke up this morning and as a manager you usually wake up with a feeling in the pit of your stomach. I didn’t have that today and I thought, ‘Wonderful’. But that’s because I trust my players so much.”

Clark noted that the match against Denmark was special:

“We’ve come a long way. I told them before the game that this is the opportunity we’ve been waiting for. This was our chance, one game. It was like a playoff final. We put everything on the line. There’s always the last step, and it’s always the hardest.”

The Scottish coach also emphasized the drama of the match:

“There were moments in the game that went in our favor. We were 2-1 up against 10 men, but we conceded a goal and thought, ‘What are we doing?’ But that’s typical of Scotland.”

Thanks to this victory, Scotland reached the World Championship for the first time in 28 years.
