The 49-year-old ex-footballer is at risk of bankruptcy due to the consequences of the disastrous real estate business he ran with his brother Sean.
After ending his career in 2010, Finnan decided to invest the money he earned in a joint business with his brother. However, the matter burned down. Steve suspected wrongdoing in the way the company was run and sued his own brother back in 2016.
In 2018, the High Court ordered the ex-player to pay £4 million in compensation. However, Finnan never saw this money: a year later, his brother Sean was declared bankrupt, which made it impossible to pay off the debt.
The situation only worsened. In an attempt to restore justice, Finnan became involved in a series of new trials that turned against him:
• He sued law firm Charles Russell Speechlys for £6m in negligence, but lost.
• The court ordered him to pay a five-figure sum of court costs, which he did not pay.
• He also lost a dispute with another law firm, Candey, owing them £120,000.
A bankruptcy petition has now been filed against Finnan himself. A judge recently rejected his appeal, calling attempts to delay the process groundless and hopeless.
The financial problems of the Liverpool legend became evident as early as 2020. Fans were then shocked to learn that Finnan had auctioned off his most prized possessions: a 2005 Champions League winner’s medal, a replica cup and signed shirts.
It is now clear that this was a desperate move to stay afloat. A date has not yet been set for Finnan’s final bankruptcy hearing, but the judge said it was only a matter of time.
