“No one told us that he had pubalgia (injury in the groin area). Here, in the national team, he was treated for a problem with lumbago (pain in the lower back),” said de la Fuente.
The coach expressed surprise at the actions of Barcelona, which forced Yamal to withdraw from the training camp after announcing a new course of treatment for pubalgia, which the national team was not aware of.
De la Fuente said the club should have notified the federation about the medical tests. According to the coach, the 18-year-old football player himself was very upset that he had to leave the team’s location, as he wanted to help it in the decisive matches for the World Cup.
De la Fuente also responded to criticism from Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, who previously accused the RFEF of not caring about the players there.
“I didn’t have enough empathy from him, since he himself was the coach of the national team. I would solve such issues privately,” said the Spaniard.
Commenting on the accusations of the use of painkillers (in particular, Voltaren), de la Fuente called them baseless. He emphasized that taking analgesics is a normal practice for athletes and fully defended the professionalism of the national team’s medical staff.
”We told the truth about what happened. We always put the player’s health first,” concluded de la Fuente.
