The hosts opened the scoring already in the time added to the first half. Haris Tabakovich failed to realize the penalty, but Philipp Zander was the first to finish and led the attack to take the goal.
In the second half, the referee again awarded a penalty in favor of Borussia, and this time Kevin Dix executed the shot flawlessly to increase the lead. In the 64th minute, Tabakovic recovered from the previous failure and made the score 3:0.
Cologne managed to score only at the end – in the 90th + 2nd minute, Lucas Waldschmidt converted a penalty and scored a prestige goal.
Despite the loss, Cologne were more active in attack with 19 shots on goal and had the upper hand in possession, but Borussia’s efficiency in the closing stages proved decisive.
