Manchester United and England legend David Beckham received a long-awaited knighthood. The dedication ceremony took place at Windsor Castle, where 50-year-old Beckham received the honorary title of Sir from the hands of King Charles III.

As reported by Goal, this award, which has been awaited for years, was awarded for Beckham’s outstanding contribution to the sport, as well as his extensive philanthropic activities. Beckham, who was dressed in a gray three-piece suit, was visibly moved during the ceremony.

He was accompanied by his wife Victoria, who can now bear the title of Lady Victoria.

“This is an incredibly proud day for us as a family,” said Sir David after the award.

“I grew up in the East End of London in a very humble family and my dream was always to become a professional footballer, to play for Manchester United and for my country. Everything else that came with it was incredible.”

In addition to a brilliant football career, Beckham was recognized for his many years of humanitarian work, in particular as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, with which he has been working since 2005. He also played a key role in London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.
