SLAVIA PRAGUE — ARSENAL

Unfortunately for some, the number 13 proved to be Arsenal’s lucky number during Atletico’s visit to the Emirates, where Mikel Arteta’s men scored four goals in 13 minutes. This allowed Arsenal to maintain an ideal position at the “top” of the main stage of the tournament.

The European ambitions of Slavia Prague are much more modest: they seek to win the first victory in the new European Cup season.

Indrij Trpisovski’s side have picked up two points from three matches, sharing the points with Bude/Glimt, then conceding to Inter and recently picking up a point against Atalanta. Two points are just enough for 28th place, but the aforementioned defeat to Inter was their only one in all competitions this season and they have followed Arsenal’s example in defense of late with a run of five consecutive clean sheets.

In the championship of the Czech Republic, Slavia regained the first place, ahead of the irreconcilable rival – Sparta Prague. On the other hand, Trpisovski’s wards failed to score in only one of their last 27 home matches.

Napoli have never progressed beyond the last 16 in UEFA’s premier competition and manager Antonio Conte has a modest personal record, so the Serie A Cudetto holders will be desperate to go as far as possible this season.

However, so far a lot has not gone according to plan: after losing their captain due to a red card in the match with Manchester City (0:2), Napoli won against Sporting (2:1). In the third round, the champions of Italy again remained in the top ten and, despite Scott McTominay’s double, were defeated by PSV (2:6).

After that disappointing setback, Conte’s side bounced back a bit to regain top spot in Italy with a win over Inter before narrowly beating Lecce. However, the Neapolitans’ 100% performance at home was interrupted by a goalless draw with Como on Saturday.

Napoli have lost just once in their last 18 home Champions League matches – to Real Madrid two years ago – and have won 11 in that period. This list of achievements also includes Eintracht, which lost to Napoli (0:2) in the 2022/23 season. The clubs have also previously met in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup, and then, in 1994, the German team won both matches.

Eintracht will head south this time around, needing a positive result after a lackluster start to the season. Having achieved a best-ever third-place finish in Bundesliga history, Frankfurt is only sixth after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Heidenheim. It follows a penalty shoot-out loss to Borussia D in the DFB-Pokal last week.

Additionally, Dino Toppmeller’s side have conceded 25 goals in their last eight matches, including two consecutive 1-5 defeats in the Champions League. After beating Galatasaray by the same score in the first round, Eintracht lost to Atletico and Liverpool.

Although Topmeller’s men have not won any of their last three away matches, Frankfurt have scored at least twice in eight of their 14 matches this season.

Atlético Madrid’s season in the Champions League is not characterized by stability yet: in the first three matches, the club scored only three points. Diego Simeone’s side have lost both of their away games to Liverpool and Arsenal, with their only win coming in a thrashing of Eintracht.

After finishing as runners-up twice in 2014 and 2016 (both times losing to Real Madrid in the final), Atlético were again knocked out by their Madrid rivals in the Round of 16 on penalties last season.

However, Los Colchoneros have been formidable at home, losing just one of their last 16 matches, making it ten wins from their last 11 Champions League meetings.

In the championship, Atlético is in fourth place, having scored 22 points. Simeone’s side have lost just one of their last nine games in all competitions and go into this encounter on a positive note after a convincing win over Sevilla.

Meanwhile, Union St-Gilaois also have three points from three games, beating PSV but losing their next two matches to Newcastle and Inter. The Belgian champions conceded nine goals in this European cup and must seriously add to avoid another failure. This season, Union debuted in the Champions League after three consecutive seasons in the Europa League.

Union currently lead the Belgian league with 32 points from 13 matches, while also having the most goals scored (28) and the fewest goals conceded (7). They will travel to Madrid after an away win against Zulte-Waregem.

Having scored nine goals in the last three matches in all competitions, the Belgians are in excellent form and will not be afraid to upset the “mattressniki”. The match marks the first ever meeting between the two clubs and the Union’s first official game against Spanish opposition.

After eight matches without a win in all competitions, Italy’s most successful club soon parted ways with Igor Tudor in a bid to stem the tide. Under Massimo Brambilla, Juventus finally ended their long wait for victory with a win over Udinese – a result that preceded the arrival of new and very experienced coach Luciano Spalletti. He was given a contract until the end of the season and led the team to a Serie A match against Cremonese which marked the club’s 128th anniversary.

Spalletti’s reign has had a positive start and ended with a win that kept Juventus in the top four, but now they need to turn their attention to the troubled European Cups.

Juventus have won just two of their last 11 Champions League matches. Juventus, who are unbeaten in four matches against Sporting, have won both meetings in Turin and most recently beat the Lions in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Europa League.

Tuesday’s game will be Sporting’s 20th official match in Italy, with the club still looking for a first win after losing 14 matches.

The Lions have also lost their last three away Champions League games, but are still four points ahead of Juventus. This season, Sporting defeated Kairat, then conceded to Napoli, but recovered with a win over Marseille.

Rui Borges saw his side claim their fifth straight win in all competitions in Friday’s final Primeira Liga match, helping the Lions to just three points behind leaders Porto after ten rounds.

Trilos come into the match with wins in each of their last three matches, the last of which came against Aris, which saw Mendilibar’s men climb to the top of the Super League.

PSV are also in good form with a win over Fortuna last Friday, their fifth win in a row in all competitions and leaving them second in the league behind Feyenoord only on goal difference.

Peter Bosz’s men have gone eight games unbeaten, the last of which came against debutants Union in the first round of the Champions League. The team then took a point away against Bayer Leverkusen, and then unexpectedly defeated Napoli (6:2) in front of their fans.

Reaching another European Cup play-off could prove a difficult task for Bosh’s side, who still face Newcastle and Liverpool, interspersed with home games against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.

Indeed, the Danes have never beaten English teams away from home in any competition, and in their last 21 away Champions League matches they have won just twice, losing 15 of them.

However, since the loss to Borussia D, Copenhagen have picked up two decent wins and one draw in their domestic matches – the last time the team won against Fredericia (3-2) in the league, but they are still five points behind leaders Aarhus with one game in hand.

On Tuesday, Bude/Glimt will play the French team in the European Cups for the second time in history. They drew 1-1 with Monaco’s arch-rivals Nice last season in the Europa League.

New Monaco coach Sebastien Poconioli has inherited a squad that has been damaged both physically and mentally, but things have been going a little better on both fronts in recent weeks. The Monegasques are progressing and gaining a bit more consistency, having won two of their previous three Ligue 1 matches, scoring six goals.

It’s a stark contrast to a team that went on a five-match winless run until the end of October, earning just two points from three Champions League rounds. After a crushing defeat at Club Brugge, Monaco surprisingly picked up points at Manchester City before drawing with Tottenham.

Monaco are winless in their previous four Champions League away matches, conceding three or more goals in each of those matches. They have not managed to win in any of their six previous Champions League matches, but have managed to avoid defeat in regular time in three of their last four such matches.

Their only previous meeting with the Norwegian club in Europe came more than 20 years ago in October 2005 when Viking beat them 1-0 in a UEFA Cup match.
