According to Mareska, the team did not show a high enough level of play: “I think that in general we were not good enough. When you are not at your best in the Premier League, the consequences can be serious. When you cannot win, it is important not to lose.”
The coach noted defensive mistakes that led to missed goals. “The second goal was a long pass behind the back, we had a two-on-one with two central defenders and we didn’t work properly. The first goal came after a throw-in because they brought six or seven players into the penalty area,” explained Maresca.
He also emphasized the lack of creativity and errors in ball control: “We didn’t create many chances, apart from the goal, we lost second goals, we didn’t give 100% on the field. With the score 1:0, we lost some duels, and we have to play better against this team.”
Maresca added that the quality of crosses could also be a problem: “When we approach certain areas of the pitch, we cross because we expect to have four or five players in the box. Today, maybe it was more about the quality of the passes than the players who were in the box.”
Chelsea will play their next match in the FA Cup against Wolverhampton (October 29).
