Rhys James was the subject of a major interview for The Football Interview program on BBC Sport, where he shared his candid thoughts about his career, struggles and life off the field.

The 25-year-old pupil of the “blue” academy did not hide that receiving the captain’s armband was the realization of his childhood dream.

“Being the captain of Chelsea is something I’ve dreamed about since I was a child, especially in the Champions League matches,” James admitted. He emphasized that it was extremely important for the club to return to the main European Cup after a two-year absence.

Much of the conversation focused on James’ injury struggles that have dogged him in recent seasons. The defense attorney talked about the psychological side of rehabilitation, describing these periods as “lonely and depressing.” He admitted that it was difficult to watch the team from the sidelines, feeling isolated, but these difficulties only hardened his character. ​

Touching on the topic of leadership, James admitted that his style of captaincy differs from legendary predecessors such as John Terry. He tries to be “100% Rhys James” rather than “10% John Terry”, focusing on leading the team by example on and off the pitch.

James, who under new coach Enzo Maresca sometimes appears in the center of the field, confirmed his readiness to play in any position where the team needs him. However, its main purpose remains unchanged:

“Lifting the trophy as Chelsea captain is something I’ve always dreamed of and it’s something I work for every day.”

In addition to football, James unexpectedly spoke about his passion for fashion. He admitted that he likes fashion shows and that’s what really interests him. Describing his style, he noted:

“He’s a lot calmer now. A few years ago he was a little more aggressive.” When asked if it was related to growing up, he joked: “Maybe, or it’s just boredom!”.
