Sheffield Wednesday Football Club has officially gone into external administration due to its dire financial situation. As a result, 12 tournament points were immediately deducted from the team in accordance with the rules of the English Football League (EFL).

The decision was the culmination of months of chaos and financial problems that marked the final years of owner Depfon Chansiri’s reign. The club has repeatedly faced transfer embargoes and sanctions due to late payment of salaries to players and staff.

The crisis deepened due to significant debts to the HMRC, which eventually led to the inevitable introduction of administration.

For Wednesday fans, the news is both devastating due to the sporting penalty and welcome as it marks the end of Chansiri’s destructive reign. The club now begin the difficult process of finding new owners while sitting at the bottom of the Championship table.

It is worth mentioning that the controversial choice of the sponsor of the last season (2024-25) was added to the general picture of the chaotic management of the club. Then the British construction company MOCKBA Modular became the title partner.

Although the company was registered in the UK, media investigations quickly established that it was owned by Russian businessmen Pavel and Anna Matveev. Officially, the club claimed that MOCKBA was an acronym (Matveev Offsite Construction…), but this did not stop the wave of criticism from the fans.
