In a candid interview with The Guardian, 31-year-old former Barcelona and Everton winger Gerard Deulofeu shared what he described as “probably the hardest recovery in the history of football” as he tries to return to action after three years on the sidelines. The Spaniard has not appeared on the field in an official match since January 2023.

The career of a talented player was in danger due to a serious knee injury, which turned into a real horror. During the operation, an infection got into the football player’s body, which destroyed the cartilage and put a cross on a quick return.

Despite enormous difficulties and disappointing forecasts, the Spaniard does not give up. He is supported by former club Udinese, who, despite his contract expiring in January 2025, have allowed the player to use the club’s infrastructure for rehabilitation.

Deulofeu, a pupil of the famous Barcelona La Masia academy, managed to play for Everton, Sevilla, Watford and other clubs during his career. He cites the desire for his children to see him play, as well as the loyalty of Udinese fans, as the main motivation for his return. ​

While the future remains uncertain, Deulofeu’s daily struggle for his career is already an incredible story of resilience. His possible return to the field will be one of the most inspiring comebacks in modern football.
