UEFA has approved the format of the European Championship in 2028, which will be held at nine stadiums in the United Kingdom and Ireland with the participation of 24 teams.
As in current European selections, 12 qualifying groups will be formed of four or five teams.
The owners of the tournament England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales will also take part in qualification, being divided into different groups.
12 winners of groups and eight best owners of second places (20 teams) will directly enter the Euro-2028 final tournament.
Two places in the final tournament will be reserved for the two best-host countries that will not be able to take the first or best second places in their qualifying groups.
The remaining places will be played in the butt matches between the teams that have taken second places in the qualifying groups and the best winners of the UEFA-2026/27 League Divisions.
Depending on the number of reserved places used by the owners, the number of permits played in the playoffs may vary from two to four According to one of three scenarios:
– both reserved slots have been used: eight teams will compete in two ways in two places in the final part, the fights will be composed with single semi -finals and finals;
– one reserved slot has been used: twelve teams will compete in three ways in three places in the final part (also one semi -finals and finals);
– no reserved slot has been used: eight teams compete in four home and field matches of playoffs whose winners are released to the final tournament.
The tournament calendar will be published in the fall of 2025. The regulation with all other details will be published by the end of the year.
