Roma head coach Claudio Ranieri commented on his team’s defeat in the Serie A match against Atalanta (0:2).

“As long as we had the energy, we fought back and responded. We also have to remember that we played on Thursday and came back at five in the morning – not that I want to use that as an excuse. We recovered quite well. But Gasperini was able to make the substitutions he wanted and I didn’t have a midfielder like Pizzilli because he was suspended so we had to make do with what we had.

I was happy with the boys because at the beginning of the second half we had a good chance to take the lead. It is a pity that Dovbyk could not realize the moment, because he managed to break through the Atalanta defense together with Dybala. These are little things that, if you keep trying, if you are determined enough, you can turn them into results.

Atalanta have what it takes to challenge for the title. I don’t want to praise them too much, but they are ready to fight to the end. If that happens, it will be a great season because there are some strong teams at the top.

In the dressing room I told the boys well done for fighting until the end and told them we now have a long run of games in December where we play twice a week. There are no easy games. In fact, the next game will be more difficult than this one.

If the players continue to listen to me, as they have done in recent games, we will find solutions. We must keep fighting and not give up in the face of failure. I don’t like players who give up and that’s something I’ve never accepted.

We have to be able to react and fight for every ball like we did tonight until we pass out. All of my substitutions were due to fatigue or physical pain. So I have to give credit to Atalanta, but I also want to give credit to my own team,” the club’s press service quoted Ranieri as saying.
