Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has recalled how he left Man United when he took over as interim manager following the resignation of Erik ten Gag.

“The moment I took the interim role I said I was here to help United and to stay to help United and I meant it. So I was very disappointed and it hurt that I had to leave.

In the end I put up with it because I understand the new coach as well. I have been in football for a long time and was a coach myself. I understand.

I talked about it with Reuben, and to his credit, the conversation was appreciative, as between men, as between people, as between leaders. It helped me a lot to move on and immediately start negotiating new opportunities, which of course lifted my spirits,” said van Nistelrooy.

It will be recalled that earlier the Foxes announced the resignation of Steve Cooper after unsuccessful results in the Premier League.
