Manchester United thrashed Barnsley, Stoke City dealt with Fleetwood, Sheffield Wednesday got past Blackpool, Brentford saw off Leyton, Crystal Palace beat QPR and Everton were knocked out by Southampton.

The icing on the cake was a long series of post-match penalties, during which Fulham managed to get past Preston.
