When Did Katy Perry & Russell Brand Break Up? According to Perry, her ex-husband said he wanted a divorce at the end of 2011 — and he notified her about it over text. During a 2013 Vogue interview, the “California Gurls” artist said, “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”

Why Did Russell Brand & Katy Perry Divorce? Both Perry and Brand had different answers for why they divorced. During her 2013 Vogue interview, Perry said, “At first, when I met him, he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness. He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So, that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting.”
Perry added that she felt “a lot of responsibility for it ending” but claimed that she “found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. … I let go and I was like: This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me. So, I have moved on from that.”
As for Brand, the comedian has opened up about their breakup quite a few times over the years. Most recently, in April 2025, the Get Him to the Greek star talked about their split on his podcast “Stay Free with Russell Brand.”
“What can I tell you is, when I was married to Katy Perry, she’s like a — not entirely normal, because she’s an extraordinary, massive star — but she’s not weird or off key,” Brand began, adding, “And wasn’t involved in anything nefarious, as far as I could tell. The reasons that a marriage didn’t work are the normal human reasons marriages don’t work, and I have nothing but respect for her.”
