Fans even wondered if the show was canceled despite the series’ success.
Hollywood Life has compiled all the details about the future of Squid Game, below. (Warning: spoilers are ahead for season 2 of Squid Game)
Was Squid Game Canceled? Season 3 of Squid Game will be its last, according to Tudum by Netflix and Squid Game director, writer and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk. The mastermind behind the thriller penned an emotional note following the release of season 2, confirming that the third season will be the last. The letter was titled, “The real game begins.”
“It’s been almost three years since season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place,” Dong-hyuk wrote. “I am beyond excited to be writing this letter to announce the date for season 2 and share the news of season 3, the final season.”
The series writer recalled the first day of filming season 2, and he thought, “Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of Squid Game.” He described the experience as “surreal” and asked fans how they felt being back in the game.
“I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story,” Dong-hyuk continued. “We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you re excited for whats to come. Thank you, always, and see you soon, everyone.”
Since the director confirmed that season 3 is the last, it doesn’t appear that Squid Game was abruptly canceled.
Squid Game Season 3 Release Date Season 3 of Squid Game will release in 2025. A specific date has not been determined yet.
Dong-hyuk wrote in his open letter to fans that the third season will be a “fierce” ride.
“Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge?” Dong-hyuk teased. “Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with season 3, which will be brought to you next year.”
Squid Game Season 2 Ending Explained Season 2 of Squid Game gave viewers an even more stressful ending than season 1. One of the most notable moments was when Jung-bae died. While speaking with The Wrap following the season 2 premiere, actor Lee Jung-jae (who plays Gi-hun) explained how Gi-hun “became a different person” after Jung-bae’s death.
“It’s a big shock that leaves him devastated,” Jung-jae told the publication in December 2024. “[Gi-hun] believed very strongly that he could end the game together with Jung-bae, but that’s no longer possible anymore. … After Jung-bae died at the send of season 2, Gi-hun became a different person.”
