The new administration in the US has a completely different view of the ways to end the war in Ukraine than they do in Europe.
Journalists drew attention to how the messages voiced by Ukraine’s European partners and Americans from the new administration at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week contrasted with each other.
Thus, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte promised that Ukraine would eventually join the military alliance, and argued that negotiations with the Russian Federation should begin only after Ukraine has a sufficiently strong position.
“If we reach a bad [мирної] agreement, it will only mean that we will see the Russian president “high-fiving” the leaders of North Korea, Iran and China,” he said, adding that the best way to prevent another Russian invasion is to bring Ukraine into NATO.
However, Trump’s special envoy Richard Grenell, speaking at the forum via video link, assured that the US would not agree to expand the bloc until some member countries meet defense spending commitments of 2% of GDP.
Disagreements regarding the need for peace negotiations were also noticeable. Most European countries, especially in the east of the continent, do not want talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin until he shows what they see as a genuine desire to end the conflict. The Trump administration believes that immediate, direct negotiations are the only way to end the conflict.
“We find it quite shocking that there are so many foreign ministers in Europe, so many American politicians at the time, who just didn’t try to stop the war. Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden haven’t spoken in over three and a half years. Now we think it’s outrageous . The American people find it outrageous,” Trump’s representative said.
Trump and hopes for peace in Ukraine As UNIAN wrote, Trump’s peace plan will most likely involve territorial concessions from Ukraine. In exchange for these concessions, the West will provide its security guarantees to Kyiv.
We also reported that Donald Trump threatened to ban Russian exports to the United States if Moscow does not agree to a peace agreement. However, the Kremlin is likely to ignore this warning, since Russia sells almost nothing to America anyway.
