Tom Cruise, 63, shows off shirtless physique in behind-the-scenes footage of Mission Impossible

The 63-year-old action star — whose movie Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning hit theaters in May — posted unreleased footage featuring him dressing in a wet suit to film scenes in a deep tank of water.

‘I trained for over a year to be able to physically handle the amount of oxygen deprivation,’ he said in the clip’s voiceover. 

Director Christopher McQuarrie also appeared in the Instagram reel and said, ‘I’m always surprised by what it is we’re doing. That’s the amazing thing about this franchise — it’s all about constantly pushing the envelope as far as we can.’

The esteemed actor, who is dating Ana de Armas, wrote in the caption: ‘Thank you McQ and our entire cast and crew for this experience of a lifetime.

‘I hope everyone enjoys all of the extras and that it gives some greater insight into what it takes to make a Mission: Impossible film.’

Other B-roll outtakes showed the longtime entertainer dangling from a plane and sitting behind the wheel of a car as it flips over in a tunnel.

The snippet was to promote the movie’s availability for digital purchase.

The new digital release gives insight into the wear-and-tear on Tom’s body throughout the filming process.

According to Variety, the Hollywood heartthrob and director reveal in the newly shared content that the joints in Tom’s fingers separated during the plane sequence.

The outlet reported that it was caused by ‘the sheer force the actor had to battle while dangling off the side of a biplane and holding onto the strap of a seat belt.’

‘Oh, this almost broke my back. You’re talking about a lot of pain here,’ Tom is quoted saying.

And he described holding on to the belt while hanging from the aircraft as ‘brutal.’

Christopher explained, ‘This separated the joints in Tom’s fingers from the force, so by the time we finished this sequence, your hands were absolutely swollen — oh my God, it was so painful to watch.’

Earlier this year Tom’s latest Mission: Impossible film was eclipsed at the box office by a children’s movie.

Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake sat at the top of the box office over Memorial Day weekend, while Cruise and his team in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning earned less than half of what its competition did.

The live-action hybrid film starring Hannah Waddingham — who also appeared in the newest Mission: Impossible film — Zach Galifianakis, Tia Carrere, and Maia Kealoha  earned an estimated $145.5 million by Sunday.

By contrast, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning pulled in about $77.5 million domestically and $127 million internationally.
