The promotional video was intended to emphasize the firepower of the platform, but, on the contrary, caused controversy, writes the Defense blog.
Spectators noted the visible vibration of the 2A42’s twin 30mm automatic guns during firing and expressed doubts about its accuracy and stabilization.
The publication states that the “Terminator” armored personnel carrier is designed to support tanks in urban conditions and close combat. In the video, it can be seen that he was shaking a lot during automatic fire, which indicates some difficulty in maintaining accuracy.
It said that after the video went viral on Russian social media, military historians and commentators derided what they called the video’s “cinematic rather than combat” nature.
“This machine scares the enemy with shaking cannons and pompous, meaningless words. The BMPT has not been used in combat for over a year. Apparently, like the only T-72B3M with the active protection system “Arena”, it is currently busy filming movies. There is no additional support for the barrel of the gun – the cover is purely decorative,” commented Andriy Tarasenko, a researcher in the field of tank development, in the video.
He also previously noted that the current design of BMPT weapons reflects aesthetic rather than tactical priorities.
“At first, the BMPT was planned to be equipped with one cannon, one stabilized automatic grenade launcher and four Kornet missiles in an armored box. But it looked weak – similar to the BMP-2. Therefore, they added a second cannon for a more formidable appearance, abandoning the stabilized grenade launcher and Kornets,” Tarasenko said.
It is indicated that the development of the “Terminator” began in the early 2000s in order to create a specialized vehicle for protecting tanks in high-threat conditions. According to the idea, twin 30 mm guns, two Ataka anti-tank missile launchers and a machine gun were to combine the mobility of an infantry fighting vehicle with the firepower of a tank.
However, it added, the lack of a modern fire stabilization system was a constant drawback, undermining its role as a precision fire support system.
The Russian company that makes the Terminator said it is designed to simultaneously engage different types of enemies, including infantry with anti-tank weapons and light armored vehicles. However, despite these statements, the Russian occupiers, as stated in the material, use this technique in Ukraine only in limited quantities.
Reports from Russian units indicate that they are skeptical about the real combat value of BMPT. They explain this by the fact that it cannot show significantly better results than existing tanks or infantry fighting vehicles.
According to the publication, Ukrainian troops destroyed several armored personnel carriers during combat operations. Open sources of Oryx intelligence indicate that Russia may have lost at least three units of the Terminator anti-aircraft missile system since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. There is information that Russia could send at least two dozen units of this equipment to the front.
The publication suggested that the limited number of BMPT on the battlefield may be due to the fact that the Russian command has deep doubts about its tactical usefulness.
According to analysts, its weapons systems mounted on an open turret remain vulnerable to modern drones and precision weapons.
