Novak studies and photographs the interesting places of Kryvyi Rih for more than 15 years: this wasteland was formed in the 1970s at the place of mine, where iron ore was mined.
“This mine has already finalized to a depth of 500 m and stopped developing it. During the closure of the mine, there are a huge number of underground drilling chambers, which from time to time sit down.
The man claims that for years he has been watching the changes of this failure and 6 years ago he even managed to go down. He warned that he could only look from the viewing platform, be near or descended inside: it is extremely dangerous:
“Every year, a little earth slides with the water, a little crumbling stones on the sides. Not something to walk here, even standing, as I can’t, it is very dangerous.”
Vladimir Kazakov, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, said that in this region numerous failures were formed through the production of iron ore. Earlier, to control the subsidence of the land of the mine, the mine was covered or undermined. Now the technology has been changed – new dips are filled with stones, forming artificial mountains.
“Only where the mines, can we observe such formations, even as canyons. The total area of shifts and collapses is 3000 hectares. The failure would never have been formed if the extraction of a large volume of minerals would not form underground cavities.”
According to the scientist, this depression in Kryvyi Rih is a unique phenomenon: its depth is the largest in Ukraine among man -made failures and is 300 meters.
