According to Defense Express analysts, the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine demonstrated for the first time how APKWS missiles successfully destroy the Kh-59.In particular, on January 25, the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine released unique footage from Odesa. The video shows how the crew of one of the Navy boats destroyed the Kh-59 missile launched by the enemy from the Su-57 aircraft at the civilian infrastructure of the Pivdenny seaport.
According to analysts, the most interesting detail of the video is that it was possible to turn the X-59 into scrap with the help of an APKWS missile. Therefore, this is the first documented case of the use of this type of weapon against such a target.
“This seems to be the first, at least public, case when our military managed to shoot down this missile with the help of APKWS. For example, earlier, in February 2024, the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine showed how Vampire missile launchers under APKWS shoot down Shaheds,” analysts note.
The APKWS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System) is said to be a high-precision weapon that combines unguided 70mm Hydra 70 missiles with semi-active laser guidance. The first reports of the transfer of this weapon from Germany appeared in 2023, and its first use against Russian targets became known in the summer of the same year.
As part of defense assistance to Ukraine, 14 Vampire installations were ordered, and all of them are already in service with the Armed Forces. These complexes are effectively used both to destroy enemy drones and missiles. It is worth noting that their delivery from the manufacturer, L3Harris Technologies, took six months for the first four systems.
According to analyst Colby Badhwar, so far the US has delivered only 14 units to Ukraine, although the required number is much higher – about 140. This is due to the presence of significant reserves of Hydra 70 missiles in the world, and BAE Systems is able to produce up to 25 thousand sets of APKWS annually. which equates to approximately 2,080 units per month.
“Given the fact that the Defense Forces of Ukraine today have a shortage of means to counter enemy missiles and drones, the supply of more Vampire missile launchers and their missiles could be a great reinforcement of our air defense,” Defense Express emphasizes.
