Taylor Swift’s empire just got bigger – but not everyone is happy (Picture: Scott A Garfitt/Invision/AP, File) It’s been one heck of a Friday for Taylor Swift fans with the Love Story singer dropping not just one but TWO major announcements.
The American singer, 35, recently concluded her worldwide Eras Tour and fans assumed she had been back in the studio, re-working old songs of hers.
Over the last few years, Taylor has been steadily re-recording her first six albums amid a tense legal battle over the ownership of their original masters.
Many fans assumed a re-recording of her sixth album, Reputation, from 2017, would be the next in line after Fearless, Speak Now, Red, and 1989, but a shocking announcement has firmly put those plans to bed.
The Cruel Summer singer has revealed that, after years of trying, she has finally repurchased the rights to the master recordings of the albums she has re-released in recent years.
In 2019, music manager Scooter Braun bought Taylor’s former label, Big Machine, meaning that he owned the masters to her self-titled debut album, as well as Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and Reputation.
Taylor has been after the ownership of her original albums since 2019 (Picture: Instagram) This means that Reputation (Taylor’s Version) is technically no longer needed, with Taylor confirming in a statement that it’s unlikely to ever see the light of day now.
‘All of the music I’ve ever made now belongs to me. I’ve been bursting into tears of joy… ever since I found out this is really happening.
‘I almost stopped thinking it could ever happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away. But that’s all in the past now. All of the music I’ve ever made now belongs to me.’
She then confirmed further on in the lengthy statement that she had barely worked on a new version of Reputation and that only unreleased demos from 2017 were ever likely to be released.

The Love Story singer made two announcements in one (Picture: Patrick Smith/Getty Images) ‘Full transparency: I haven’t even rerecorded a quarter of [the new Reputation]. The Reputation album was so specific to that time in my life, and I kept hitting a stopping point when I tried to remake it.’
One Reddit, user Joshul said: ‘I’m happy for her, but I am heartbroken now realising we are likely not getting a Reputation Taylor’s Version. I’m glad she touched on this in her letter – at least we may see those vault tracks?’
MusicListener3 paid their respects to the unfinished album: ‘R.I.P. Rep TV (which she wasn’t even a quarter done recording???)’
Fizzylights saw the funny side: ‘Taylor saying she’s barely even recorded Rep TV after Swifties have been freaking out about it for like a year and a half is funny as hell.’

McIgglyTuffMuffin felt sorry for fans who’d been waiting for the album: ‘Damn. Reputation TV truthers lost today. Barely even recorded.’
TalkingOverdose concurred: ‘She really said “Reputation TV is NOT happening” after we have all been patiently waiting…’
However, many fans also expressed delight that a re-recording of Reputation was no longer needed, with some Swifties simply happy that their idol owned all her music again.
IAmNobody85 said: ‘I’m very happy because Reputation is my favorite album after 1989 and now I can listen to it without being afraid that the re-recordings will ruin it.’
StreetPackage160 agreed: ‘This whole thing was also such a cultural moment, and a great lesson for younger artists about ownership of their stuff. I also agree with her that Reputation is perfect, would like to hear the vault tracks though.’
In better news for fans, however, Taylor confirmed in the statement that the re-recording of her 2006 self-titled debut album has been completed, and will be released ‘when the time is right’.
As for how much Taylor has paid for her masters recordings, no official figures have been released yet – but Page Six speculated that the figure could be anywhere between $600million and $1billion dollars.
