The move comes in response to recent statements by Trump, who refused to rule out the use of military or economic force to gain control of Greenland. In response, Frederiksen said: “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders”, emphasizing the autonomous status of the island and the rights of its people.
Despite the escalation of rhetoric, the Prime Minister tried to reduce tensions, noting that there is no reason to believe that the US is planning a military invasion. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen also called for calm, saying: “You can take Donald Trump seriously without taking him literally.”
