The 1981 movie “Rev” was an example of how you cannot shoot a movie.

“Rev” (in the original – ROAR) was conceived as an impressive blockbuster and at the same time a propaganda movie about the importance of saving wildlife. From the beginning, the filming process provided an unprecedented level of interaction between people and trained animals, including tigers and lions.
As you could expect, wild animals posed a real danger to the actors and the crew on the set. During the shooting, the cast and the film crew regularly faced the rough instincts of predators placed in an unfamiliar environment.
“From sudden cases to outbreaks of territorial aggression – animal behavior testified to simple biological truth: wild animals are guided protective or aggressive reaction, “Trevers writes.
Members of the film crew often received bites and scratches. The screenwriter, director and headformer Noel Marshall, as well as his wife, Tippi Hedren, who played a major female role – both received numerous serious injuries. Marshall received eight stabbed wounds from the lion’s bite, and Hedren Leo bit.
But not only carnivorous animals pose a threat to the actors and the crew. In one scene, Hedren had to scream frantically, walking on the elephant’s back. Although he was friendly to the actress by now, the noise scared him. The elephant grabbed the woman with a trunk and dropped from herself. As a result, she received a complicated fracture of the leg.
In total, at least 70 people were injured in different severity. It was one of the reasons why the shooting lasted for five years.
“The extraordinary risks that the shooting team went to, inadvertently highlighted the effects of improper treatment of wildlife instead of drawing attention to the conservation of nature. Instead, the movie became an example of why even good intentions should be supported by strict safety measures and deep respect for the animal world.” , – Trevers writes.
