Saab showed how RBS-15 with Gripen can crush Russian S-400s and sink missile destroyers / photo WikipediaThe Swedish defense concern Saab released a promotional video in which it demonstrated the combat capabilities of the RBS-15 missile, including the destruction of components of the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system and the destruction of large surface ships. The missile is used from a ship, a ground launcher and a JAS 39 Gripen fighter.
While the upgraded version of the RBS-15 Mk4 Gungnir is nothing new – it was ordered for the Swedish Armed Forces back in 2017 as a development of a missile that has been in service since the 1980s – a new video clearly demonstrates what targets it is positioned against today.
In the video, a pair of Gripen fighters strike air defense elements, in particular, the Russian 91N6 surveillance radar, which is part of the S-400 and provides a circular view at a declared range of up to 600 km. Together with the radar, one of the launchers of the complex is also destroyed.
The naval targets in the video were not Russian ships, but Chinese Type 052D missile destroyers. Saab even provided the actual ship number – 172, which belongs to the destroyer Kunming, the first ship of this class. The video shows the operation of self-defense systems – the installation of radar jammers and attempts to intercept missiles with the Type 730 artillery system, which turn out to be unsuccessful. As a result, all missiles hit the targets.
Each of the depicted destroyers has a displacement of about 7.5 thousand tons and is equipped with 64 universal launchers. At the same time, Saab did not begin to depict Russian missile destroyers, which is explained simply: there are no such ships in the Russian Navy – there is only the unrealized project 23560 “Leader”.
Separately, the video emphasizes the ease of programming the RBS-15 thanks to the intuitive software. According to the stated characteristics, the RBS-15 Mk4 has a range of more than 300 km, a warhead weighing 200 kg, a total weight of about 650 kg (up to 810 kg with boosters), an active radar homing head, an inertial system and jam-resistant satellite navigation.
Gripen aircraft for UkraineUkraine intends to purchase at least 100 Gripen E aircraft. It is planned to implement the agreement in 10-15 years. And by 2033, open local production of these aircraft is planned in Ukraine.
The cost of financing the deal has not been disclosed. It is known that each of the Gripen fighters will cost about 125 million euros.
The Swedish Air Force has announced that the country will soon be able to deliver deep strikes far behind enemy lines. They will achieve this earlier than planned, as the Air Force and the Swedish Defense Materials Agency (FMV) complete the integration of Gripen aircraft with the German-made Taurus cruise missile ahead of schedule.
