Russia can currently use the fact of negotiations for propaganda purposes.
The deputy noted that Ukraine is not afraid of negotiations and is ready for them, but these negotiations must be conducted in good faith.
“We are ready for negotiations in good faith, and today we see it very clearly that Putin and Russia are not ready for negotiations, they are putting forward ultimatums. They can use the very fact of negotiations for propaganda purposes, for political purposes. That is, we do not see any signs of Russia’s readiness for negotiations,” Merezhko noted.
At the same time, the MP was asked whether the fact that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin wants to meet with US President-elect Donald Trump is not a sign of Russia’s readiness for negotiations.
“The fact is that Putin is now in political isolation, and for him such a meeting with the president of the United States would be of great importance, which he would use for his own purposes. This is not about starting negotiations at all. It is about how Putin will use this meeting with Trump to show the world that there is no isolation, that despite his status as a war criminal, they are ready to conduct serious negotiations with him,” Merezhko believes.
At the same time, the deputy notes that Trump and his nominee for the post of US special representative, Keith Kellogg, are giving encouraging signals when they start using the terminology used by Ukraine. In particular, the United States advocates the achievement of a just, sustainable and comprehensive peace, and these are, in fact, the elements of Zelenskyi’s Peace Formula. It is about peace based on international law.
“We really hope that the administration of the new president, his special representative, are determined to restore peace based on international law,” Merezhko said.
The deputy also recalled the decision of the UN International Court of Justice, which demands the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and the cessation of aggression.
“The implementation of this decision of the UN International Court of Justice should be a signal that Russia really wants to start negotiations and is ready for these negotiations, but this is not the case,” Merezhko emphasized.
According to him, the parties’ views on war and negotiations are diametrically opposed.
“I think that Trump, his administration and his advisers understand this very well,” Merezhko said.
