The history and prospects of Dron-Kamikadze “February”: Application will only grow

But there is a key difference: Ukraine uses drones-Kamikadze exclusively on military facilities and strikes them with high accuracy. Unlike the Russian army, which launches its “Shahda” along the residential quarter of civilian cities.
Forbes reminds that the development of “February” began in 2022 at Antonov in partnership with Ukroboronprom. At the end of 2023 he was adopted, and at the beginning of 2024, evidence of successful use of the drones “February” began to appear on the network.
According to Forbes, at the beginning of “February” weighed up to 300 kg, had a wingspan of 6.7 meters and a length of 4.4 meters. The gasoline engine drives a three -bladed screw in the back. The design has a characteristic V-shaped tail, which increases stability and reduces aerodynamic resistance. Initially, the drone carried out the explosive amount of 50 kilograms weighing and had an effective flight range of about 1000 kilometers. Further modernization increased capacity to 75 kilograms and expanded its flight range to about 2000 kilometers.
“The cost of each device is estimated at about $ 200,000, which is much higher than that of Russian Shahaneda, but much less than the winged rocket,” the article reads.
The authors write that the drone is flying on the satellite, but approaching the goal rests on its machine vision – it is to perform complex trajectories of flight, to avoid radar detection, to bypass the nearby radius air defense systems and to accurately affect the target.
The article lists the “fierce” goals in the depths of the territory of the Russian Federation. In particular, it is believed that on July 1, 2025, two February drones penetrated 1400 kilometers into the territory of Russia and struck the electromechanical dome plant in Izhevsk. It is a key manufacturer of TOR-M air defense systems and Harpia drones. Also in July “February” was spotted over the Leningrad region, Penza, Sochi.
February use is expected to grow. However, production volumes in Ukraine are likely to remain much lower than the production of Shahaned drone in Russia, writes Forbes. As a result, Ukraine will retain its strategy for accurate blows with the help of these advanced drones, not massive barriers, as those used by Russia.
“For the success of this strategy,” February “will require constant modernization, integration of achievements in drone technology and computer vision to counteract new Russian defense systems,” the authors add.
They conclude that Ukraine will expand the role of drones “February” because it seeks to move the fighting in the territory in the depths of the Russian Federation.

It should be reminded that the analyst known under the pseudonym Tatarigami explained that due to the remoteness of goals in the depth of Russia it is impossible to significantly increase the fighting part of the shock Ukrainian drones and therefore they do relatively little harm. He emphasized that engineers are looking for a balance between flight range and amounts.
