The film’s nominations include the top prize of best picture, as well as lead actor Timothée Chalamet picking up his third nomination at only 30 years old, which The Hollywood Reporter predicted. Director Josh Safdie also received nods — four to be exact — in his first time being nominated by the Academy. (Scroll down to see more nominations.)
Released by A24, Marty Supreme follows Marty Mauser (Chalamet), a table tennis hustler trying to make it out of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where the movie was filmed. Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, Emory Cohen and Sandra Bernhard round out the cast.
In addition to the film being critically praised, it was also the hot topic on social media due to its wild marketing campaign with Chalamet at the forefront. It included a satirical A24 marketing meeting, an orange blimp, Chalamet appearing atop the Las Vegas Sphere, exclusive Marty Supreme jackets, an orange-lit Empire State Building and the actor crashing a table tennis tournament in New York. The film’s table tennis consultant, Diego Schaaf, told THR in December: “I really hope this gives the sport the breakthrough it deserves.”
