In the video, Nick Reiner, 32, is seen at around 9:15 pm Sunday as he’s confronted by four vehicles while walking near the intersection of Exposition Boulevard and Vermont Avenue in LA, which is roughly 15 miles from his parents’ home. As the officers close in, the suspect is seen raising his hands above his head; he was wearing a black and green sweater, a hat and carrying a backpack.
On Tuesday afternoon, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman spoke at a press conference where he announced that Reiner will be facing two counts of first-degree murder. He added that there were potential sentencing enhancements accounting for special circumstances because there were multiple murders. Reiner also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon — a knife, according to Hochman. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.
“No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty,” Hochman said during the press conference.
Reiner’s arrest on Sunday night occurred just hours after Rob and Michele Reiner’s bodies were found; he was booked on suspicion of murder the next morning and held without bail. The slain couple was initially discovered in their home by their daughter, Romy, according to multiple sources close to the family. The Los Angeles Police Department said Monday afternoon that their initial investigation indicated that Nick is “responsible” for the homicide death of his parents.
By Tuesday. Reiner has hired famous criminal defense attorney Alan Jackson for legal representation. Jackson confirmed that he is representing Reiner while speaking to the assembled media as he entered a Dec. 16 hearing before the LA District Attorney. He also said on Tuesday that Rob Reiner’s son did not attend his scheduled arraignment hearing as he had not yet been medically cleared to be transported to the courthouse.
Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele, 70, were found dead in their home on Chadbourne Ave., with the couple “suffering lacerations consistent with a knife,” law enforcement sources told TMZ. There was reportedly no sign of forced entry.

One of three children shared by the couple, Nick Reiner battled drug addiction, experienced homelessness and spent multiple stints in rehab. His struggles were channeled into a film loosely based on his life, Being Charlie (2015), which he co-wrote and his father directed.
Before that film, Reiner directed some of the most beloved Hollywood films of the last 35 years. The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Misery (1990), A Few Good Men (1992)The American President (1995) and The Bucket List (2007) are among his 20-plus directing credits. Reiner received only a single Oscar nomination as a producer A Few Good Men and was never nominated for an Academy Award for directing any of the classic films he brought to the screen. He earned two Primetime Emmy Awards, a British Academy Film Award, and nine Golden Globes over his long career.
